Certified Hand Therapists (CHTs) are occupational therapists who, through advance study, specialize in rehabilitating patients with hands and upper quadrant conditions. CHTs have a minimum of five years of clinical experience and have passed a rigorous examination of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper extremity rehabilitation. The exam is administered by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission and requires detailed knowledge of the anatomy and treatment of the upper quadrant. CHTs are also required to complete continuing education specific to the hand and upper extremity. Because of their extensive training and continuing education, CHTs are able to work more effectively with patients, hastening their patients’ return to a normal lifestyle.
